What Is The Solid State Drive (SSD)?

The advancement in technology has bestowed lot of its blessing on us. Human beings with all their discoveries have given the technology very high position. Earlier computers were very huge but again the technology advanced and made it so compact and concise that they can be comfortably carried from one place to another without much loss of human energy. There are palmtops, laptops which are easy to carry anywhere we want. Then SSD came to replace the hard drives and magnetic disks and hence the technology again showed its other phase.

Solid State Drive is a semiconductor made drive. Now a day semiconductors and chips are more preferred than anything else. They help to reduce the device size, make them compact and in the same time keep their working speed fast. This means that unlike the hard disk drive it is not made out of magnetic media but semiconductor. This kind of thing is also found in the flash memory storage drive. Both of them also share one more similarity that they have non-volatile memory but unlike flash memory drive it is kept inside the computer whereas the flash memory is connected by USB port. So it is even better than the flash memory drive as we have to not carry it separately. To be honest, SSD hard drive might be considered as the best external hard drive to buy if you are looking for great performance.

SSD is more preferable than others as it doesn’t have any movable part. All the storage work in Solid State Drive is done by its flash memory chips and no rotating motor is required to rotate the magnetic plates as it is needed for hard drives. For a portable computer power usage is very important factor. The SSD use very less power while being operated. Therefore they are preferred to be used in laptops and other devices running mostly by their battery. It also provides us with faster data access option. This feature of solid state drive satisfies and makes many of its users happy as now a day speed really matters a lot. More the speed, the device is said to be more effective.

They started getting more preference over others as they produced less no noise, caused no loss of any data and produced no heat output as the others do.

Despite of all these advantages SSD market business was quite looming. They are mostly preferred to be used in notebooks and mobiles in this age. The biggest disadvantage with SSD is that it is very expensive. Everyone is not that rich to take out a large amount of money from their pocket just to have a storage memory of 64GB. If someone get 220GB hard disk in just the half cost of that of SSD then no one is such insane to go for SSD. Their cost is the same from the time they came to market. With all advancement and price rise and fall their cost remained constant. This cost factor became a major issue for its less marketing. Storage capacity was still a big point. None of the SSD provides us with very large storage capacity like the hard disk. This gave the conclusion that not only these drives cost more than the very traditional hard disks but also provide with less capacity.

But still there are things which make it preferable. When at a time we are running 12-13 random applications then the SSD performance is far better than that of HDD. Comparisons were done on the basis of the speed of performing multitask. At this point the SSD was proved better than any other hard drive. Battery consumption was also found to be less than that done by HDD. But these points don’t create much difference as HDD was not that bad also. So we can say that SSD has many advantages and disadvantages.

So if one doesn’t have to do much with the price then obviously the SSD is a smart choice. This provides better data security; durability and its fast speed never let you feel down. But SSD has to go a long way and cover the distance to make its entire user more satisfied than any other thing.
